I tre uker skal forskere fly høyt og lavt over Barentshavet på jakt etter ekstremvær.

Målet er å undersøke sykloner og andre værfenomener fra innsiden for å kunne gi bedre værvarsler til kystfiskere, oljeindustrien og skipstrafikken i nord.
Første tokt
Onsdag klokken 10.20 tok DLR Falcon av for sitt første tokt. På denne turen skal forskerne undersøke vindstrømmer langs kysten av Finnmark og rundt sørspissen av Spitsbergen.
Det polare lavtrykket som så ut til å utvikle seg over Norskehavet mandag og tirsdag forsvant mot Grønland. Toktet som var planlagt for tirsdag ble derfor avlyst samme morgen. Onsdagens tokt ble dermed det første i den tre uker lange Thorpex-kampanjen
- I dag flyr vi langs kysten av Finnmark for å måle vindstrømmer som kommer ut av fjordene. Vi har en relativt svak sørøstlig vind som forsterkes av landskapet og kan forårsake vinder i 15 meter per sekund eller mer i utsatte fjordstrøk. Det samme fenomenet undersøker vi langs vestkysten av Svalbard. Her er vi også spesielt interessert i en jetstrøm som går mellom Spitzbergen Nordaustlandet, forteller prosjektleder Jon Egill Kristjansson.
Litt over klokken 14 landet flyet for etterfylling av drivstoff og ifølge Andreas Dörnbrack fra Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfarht (DLR), som var i kontakt med flyet, hadde alle instrumenter fungert bra under turen.
Mens flyet undersøker luftrommet mellom Finnmark og Svalbard, planlegger resten av forskerteamet hvor flyet skal fly de neste dagene. Været er usikkert, noe som gjør det vanskelig å planlegge. Hver flytime koster om lag 50.000 kroner, og prosjektet har kjøpt 50 timer, derfor må forskerne prioritere ressursbruken nøye.
Lavtrykk på vei
- Et lavtrykk utvikler seg utenfor Lofoten med sterk vind, omlag 20 meter per sekund. Dessuten er det varslet vinder opp i 20 meter per sekund utenfor Spitsbergen på lørdag. En annen mulighet er å fly over Island og videre til Grønland for å undersøke kraftige vinder langs østkysten av Grønland. Uansett er det varslet mye skyer i hele området og det begrenser noen av målingene til instrumentene, forklarer Kristjansson.
Denne typen planlegging er et viktig element i gjennomføringen av kampanjen og Kristjansson håper neste uke byr på mye interessant vær.
Kanskje er han heldig. Søndag ser det ut som et polart lavtrykk utvikler seg vest for Svalbard og det vil trekke kald luft ned Framstredet.

Kan de ikke heller jakte på godt vær? Eller, forresten: da er det vel bare å oppsøke vannmagasinene. Hvert år (uansett mangde nedbør), rapporteres det om tørre magasiner, og derfor må strømprisene opp. Jeg antar de har mye varme der. Kanskje jeg skulle legge neste ferie til en demning?
